AYC 2010 “GO” Part:2

Dwight Nelson 2 – Prayer

After his first message, there was am amazing passionate time of prayer, which set the mood for the whole conference, unifying us, making us of one accord, so you can imagine, the next time Pastor Dwight took to the pulpit we were indeed paying attention.

Picking up where he left off in Acts it was declared that the secret of the amazing success of the early church in the book of acts was quite simply the undervalued activity of prayer.

It is easy to maintain the status quo “Form of godliness” but have you ever wondered what that looks like to God? we are not fooling anyone, there is no substitute for life changing spirituality and real connection to God, this can not be achieved without taking Time for him, take a look at these piercing words from John Dawson;

“The priorities of eternity and the spiritual world should be the realities that dominate our thinking. Are you a Christian in belief but an agnostic in practice. . . . If we really believed this truth, we would pray with intensity, and we would pray constantly.” (John Dawson, Taking Our Cities for God 139, 140)

The Book of acts records prayer by the main characters a total of 25 time, if it was not vital, why would such emphasis be given? even if it were only mentioned once! that would be enough for me to consider it of significant importance, but twenty-five times? we terribly undervalue, and misuse prayer.

It is clear that God’s Love for his lost Earth children is the greatest power in the universe, this is the power we want to unleash through prayer in the same way that Paul exhorted Timothy;

I Timothy 2:1, 3—“I urge then that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone. . . . This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

So, we now understand the theory, lets have a look at the application, how do I effectively pray for the lost?

  1. Make a list of the people who you care about, who need to know Christ and His Truth, God will give you a burden for them, they could be lost friends, family, colleagues, students, strangers, whomever the Lord impresses you.
  2. Pray the List, best explained this way,“As we seek to win others to Christ, bearing the burden of souls in our prayers, our own hearts will throb with the quickening influence of God’s grace; our own affections will glow with more divine fervor; our whole Christian life will be more of a reality, more earnest, more prayerful.” (Prayer 245)
  3. Work the List, learn to be a contagious Christian, work with these people, care for them, show them the face of Jesus in your own life, reveal His truths so they have the opportunity to come to him.
  4. Grow the List, this is a simple one, as the Lord moves you, add more names to your list. If only we all had the fervor of this quote: “Oh, that the earnest prayer of faith may arise everywhere, Give me souls buried now in . . . error, or I die! Bring them to the knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus” (Prayer 246, emphasis supplied).
  5. Keep the List. George Mueller was a man who took this principle seriously, he prayed for 5 friends, over a handful of years the first few were saved, however it took twenty-five years to save the fourth and unfortunately George died before seeing the salvation of his final friend, but we do indeed serve a faithful God, not long after George Mueller’s funeral his fifth friend gave his life to God, so in application, this tells us to never cease our prayers, just because we cannot see results.

In conclusion, let us not be discouraged, cease not in our labor for others, pray for them, love them and endure.

  1. Absolutely..how else can we be in ONE ACCORD unless we are of the ONE spirit..this is a given us via prayer..ps there is a prayer seminar at Kallangur camp ground 30th April – 4th I think Derrick Morris is running it… I’d love to go but 2 weeks after that will be attending the annual women’s ministries and can’t be greedy 😀 Thanks Luke for posting this blog..I’ve always wanted to know exactly what goes on at AYC ..whenever any of my children attended I’d receive snippets of information but they’d be so exhausted physically (while on fire spiritually) I wouldn’t get much out of them 😀 … I’ll forward on this link to other young ppl who I believe would be interested xox

  2. Sarah Curnuck Says:

    This message Pr. Dwight took would have to be one my favourites at AYC. It encouraged me to continue to pray, and not lose hope for my loved ones and friends.
    “Prayer brings Jesus to our side, and gives to the fainting, perplexed soul new strength to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil. Prayer turns aside the attacks of Satan.” {COL 250.2} “Pray one for another… The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16

    AYC has been a real blessing! Praise God!
